Where did you grow up?
Spring, Texas – out in the country, north of Houston, built Texas Tough
What are your hobbies (besides CrossFit)?
I love my family! We love hiking, riding bikes, camping, playing games, and watching movies together. My kids are in baseball, dance, and soccer. I love to watch them play and participate in all their school activities! If I get time to myself, I like reading or a good nap.
What is your occupation?
I am the North Valley Kids Coordinator and run the Children’s Ministry (birth to 6th grade) part time for the church we moved here to start 4.5 years ago. I am the wife to a Pastor so I spend time hosting a weekly small groups, leading Bible studies, prayer groups, caring for Women, and serving the church.
How were you first introduced to CrossFit?
Jonathan, my husband, started going to Crossfit just after Blade opened. He has always loved it and invited me to come with him many times. I’ve given him countless excuses to stay home while watching him get healthier and stronger and I did not. I decided to take a step of faith and try it. With the support of my friend, Christina Thomson, I tried a trial class and knew it was what I needed to do. From that point on, I had absolute assurance that Crossfit was where I needed to be and don’t want to look back!
What is your favorite WOD/movement?
Anything with a barbell! I’ve never lifted weights like you do at Blade. I’m pretty sure I thought Chris was speaking Chinese for the first several weeks while I struggled to listen to everything he told me to do. I’ve forgotten to put clips on and dropped weights everywhere doing everything completely wrong in the process. Its hard work to do it right and discipline to learn the proper technique. It has been brand new but I LOVE it with all the adrenaline that comes with it! Being strong has given me a new confidence.
What is your least favorite WOD/movement?
I think its hard to enjoy any movement I can’t RX or feel like I do slow. However, I’ve decided that its all about attitude and determination. When I see a movement in the WOD that is not my strength, I know that is the workout I need to go do and I better not miss class. I’ll set two alarms and remind myself I don’t have time for excuses. I’ll never get better and reach my goals if I only do the things I’m good at doing or comfortable with in a WOD. I trust the coaches that they know what I need to do to get healthy more than I do. I pray for strength and courage every day before I go to the gym to give it my best!
What CrossFit accomplishment are you most proud of?
Death by Power Cleans… I’ve pushed myself before but a new level of beast mode revealed itself that day (-:. RX 85 lb cleans for 14 rounds and 9 in the last minute. Considering I didn’t know what a Power Clean was 6 months prior that was a huge win for me! I was exhausted for the workout following and even days later but it was so worth it.
What is your favorite song to WOD to?
I don’t listen to the words of the music playing because I’m busy counting my reps or logistics of what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m easy to please with anything with a fast pace or lots of bass. If I had to pick one song, I’ve been motivated by that song the screams “Fight Fight Fight Fight” over and over again. I think its called “A Warrior’s Call.” I don’t listen to that kind of music at all but when I’m at the gym I know I have to be a “Warrior” if I want to change. I have to “Fight” because no one else can do the WOD for me or make the lifestyle changes I need to do in and out of the gym.
What would you like to accomplish next through CrossFit?
I want to RX more and more workouts. I’m excited to participate in the Crossfit Open for the first time. I wasn’t sure about joining Crossfit not that long ago so to register for anything feels huge! I have a list of movements to tackle but I’m excited to learn more gymnastic movements, pull ups, and increasing cardio speed. I have a long future of ministry and a family that needs me. The more I accomplish at the gym the more it directly affects my ability to accomplish my personal goals outside the gym with my health.
